Efforts are being made to diversify firefighting, traditionally seen as a predominantly male vocation, and create a more balanced workforce. Among such endeavours is the Girls' Fire Camp, set to take place on October 21, 2023, co-hosted by the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) and the Women's Fire League. The camp aims to introduce girls aged 10 to 18 to the various career opportunities within the department, along with imparting essential firefighting skills, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The camp provides a range of activities for the participants to really immerse themselves in, such as light workouts, engaging in discourse with public safety professionals, and gaining hands-on understanding of fire equipment. A tour of the Fire Department, guided by experienced professionals, is also included in the program, allowing the girls to gain valuable insights.
Initiatives like the Girls' Fire Camp are essential, as it significantly contributes to fostering a more diverse fire service for the future to creating. Young girls are given a glimpse into the firefighting profession, encouraging them to envision themselves in these critical roles.
