
Earlier this week, on the quiet evening in New Bedford was shattered by gunfire. Quick response from South-end patrol officers led to the arrest of a local man found with a defaced loaded firearm.
Per the official report by the New Bedford Police Department, events unfolded after a concerned neighbor reported shots fired near the Rural Cemetery. South-end patrol officers quickly searched the area, with Officer Brandon Duarte finding a dark vehicle parked in the cemetery's southwest section.
Inside the car was 19-year-old Jalen Kikko Carreiro Baganha of New Bedford with a defaced Smith & Wesson handgun loaded with nine rounds of ammunition and two knives in his possession. Baganha was charged with trespassing with a motor vehicle, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, and carrying a loaded firearm with defaced serial numbers.
