Joseph Czuba, a 71-year-old Illinois landlord, stands accused of a brutal hate crime carried out on October 14th. The charges, which Czuba pleads not guilty to, include three accounts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated battery, and two counts of hate crime, according to NBC Chicago. The victims of the attack are thought to have been targeted due to their Palestinian heritage and Muslim faith, per CBS Chicago.
Hanaan Shahin, the mother, survived to describe the events leading up to the attack. According to Shahin, after a heated dispute about the Israel-Hamas war, Czuba violently assaulted her and fatally wounded her young son, Wadea Al-Fayoume.
Before the carnage, Czuba had accused Shahin of being personally responsible for the Middle Eastern violence during a doorstep altercation. After delivering his grievance, he attacked her and took the life of her son, as detailed by NBC Chicago.
Shahin's frantic emergency call was not fast enough to save her son, who was savagely stabbed 26 times. Adding to the tragedy, Czuba's wife told investigators that he was a regular conservative talk radio listener, was intensely consumed by the Middle East issues, and believed that he was in physical danger from Shahin and her network of friends or relatives, as repoted by CBS Chicago.
The community has been left in a state of shock and mourning. Hundreds attended Al-Fayouma's funeral on October 16th. Meanwhile, Czuba's lawyer has expressed concerns about finding a fair jury for the trial, especially since the case has garnered attention from U.S. Preside, as mentioned in CBS Chicago.
Despite the horrific incident, a strong sense of community solidarity has emerged. Through the Chicago chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Shahin urged people to "pray for peace" and fondly remembered her son as her closest companion, as per NBC Chicago.
