The Los Angeles County Office of Violence Prevention and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science are co-hosting a gun violence prevention teach-in on Monday, October 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. This collaboration is targeted at mitigating the impact of gun violence in Los Angeles County. The event will be held at the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science campus, according to the County of Los Angeles.
Attendees of the event are in for a mix of speakers, organizers, activists, and practitioners. There will also be various activities, including free food, music, local vendors, and a resource fair. The agenda includes workshops and discussions to build community organizing, advocacy, restorative justice, and peacebuilding skills, with a special focus on healthcare equity approaches to gun violence. This is with an aim to understand gun violence, explore individual mitigating actions, and identify systemic changes needed in the county.
Additionally, students will learn how they can actively contribute to reducing gun violence. The event will also feature grieving families of gun violence victims, with discussions centered on their experiences. The intent to motivate young advocates and the community at large to effect change in gun violence, as per the County of Los Angeles.
Students and young advocates are encouraged to attend this event to contribute to the ongoing conversation about gun violence prevention. The goal is to unite with county partners and attendees to devise actionable solutions, in pursuit of a safer future for Los Angeles County residents.
