As colder days draw nearer, Massachusetts residents are preparing for the upcoming winter. A recent report by CBS Boston has shared the National Weather Service's winter forecast for 2023-2024, foreseeing a winter season warmer than usual, largely due to a strong El Nino influencing global weather patterns.
El Nino, a phenomenon marked by unusual warming of the Pacific Ocean's surface temperatures off South America's west coast, affects global weather differently based on location. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) winter forecast, during typical El Nino winters, southern regions often experience wet conditions while northern areas enjoy milder temperatures. There's a significant chance for warmer than average temperatures this winter, primarily in the far north of New England.
Although NOAA's forecast points toward warmer temperatures, it doesn't negate the possibility of cold spells. It simply means that the severity of the winter's cold spells may average out as milder over the three winter months.
According to NOAA's winter outlook, the southeastern U.S. may see above-average rainfall. This forecast also extends up to parts of southern New England. Despite anticipated warmer temperatures, major snowstorms can occur. A few substantial nor'easters can dramatically alter patterns of the winter season.
In the past, winters featuring strong El Nino conditions have typically ended with below-average snowfall in Boston and much of New England. These winters typically bring a mix of rain and snow.
