Atelier, a Chicago-based restaurant headed by James Beard-nominated chef Christian Hunter, aims to revolutionize fine dining. According to CBS News, Hunter's chef strategy involves creating dishes that reflect different cultures across a broad range of flavors and techniques.
The existence of Atelier is owed to the resignation of Iliana Regan, the previous owner of the Michelin-starred Elizabeth, who in 2020, opted to focus on her writing career and running the Milkweed Inn in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The restaurant was saved from the brink of shutdown by the pandemic when Tim Lacey took over and offered Christian Hunter the platform to continue Regan's legacy, as reported by Chicago Eater.
Utilizing his culinary skill-set, Hunter offers a unique 12-course tasting menu at Atelier, encapsulating a variety of flavors demonstrating his devotion to excellence in cooking. In a conversation with CBS News, he revealed his menu undergoes approximately three to four changes every week to ensure a fresh dining to experience customers.
In accordance with Hunter's view, the comfortable environment of Atelier mirrors a warm living room, highlighting its approach towards community. Hunter is committed to presenting luxury dining to everyone. Even though the tasting menu costs $200, the chef encourages people who usually don’t indulge in such experiences to pay what they can afford.
The Lexington, Kentucky-born chef, previously working at Community Table in Washington, Connecticut, posits a notable culinary career experience. This experience played a substantial part in bringing him to Atelier. In a Chicago Eater piece, Lacey praised Hunter's visions and tight, complex, yet non-overwhelming compositions.
Starting with aiding his mother in the kitchen, Hunter began his journey into the world of cooking. His childhood experience serves as a cornerstone for his work, allowing him to create experimental dishes sourced from various inspirations. As noted by CBS News, his experimentalist nature translates to a playful atmosphere for his guests while they dine.
As a prominent Black chef in the industry, Hunter advocates for diversity and inclusion in the cooking world. In another article by Chicago Eater, Hunter inspires culinary colleagues of color to earn the recognition they deserve, underlining that everyone can partake in enjoying food, regardless of their ethnic or geographic background.
Through his ambition and commitment, Christian Hunter is on his way to securing prime exposure in Chicago's culinary scene, as he takes Atelier closer to becoming a venue that appreciates community, inclusivity, and extraordinary culinary experiences.
