Today, a California individual known as "Molly Ruin" or "~Haley", but legally named Hagen Dunphy, confessed to distributing one kilogram of methamphetamine to an undercover federal agent in Massachusetts via postal means. This information comes directly from the U.S. Department of Justice.
The case reached across the United States, from Los Angeles to deliver it in Boston. As detailed by the same report, Dunphy agreed to mail packages laced with methamphetamine to the agent in both March and October of 2020. The first contained 698.3 grams of 98% pure d-methamphetamine hydrochloride, or "ice", and the second housed 294.69 grams of 75% pure and 204.41 grams of 97% pure d-methamphetamine hydrochloride across two bags.
The verdict, served by U.S. District Court Judge Patti B. Saris, marks a small but significant stride against drug trafficking. Dunphy faces a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, a minimum of three years to a lifetime of supervised release, and a potential $1 million in fines.
This case falls under the realm of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation. As per the OCDETF official website, the initiative aims "to identify, disrupt, and dismantle threatening high-level criminal organizations in the United States using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach". The cooperation showcased by the United States Postal Inspection Service, Drug Enforcement Administration, and the OCDETF operation stressed the value of collective effort to halt drug trafficking nationwide.
In this case, the Department of Justice report inadvertently disclosed that Dunphy was indicted on December 8, 2021, and arrested in Los Angeles on February 18, 2022. He entered a guilty plea over a year following the arrest.
