The New Bedford Police Department reported on September 27, 2023, two separate incidents of firearm seizures during one shift.
The first incident involved Major Crime detectives responding a call about two males spotted with guns around Chestnut St. and Willis St. One of the males, Daziere Colton, age 18, discarded a loaded .22 caliber Ruger pistol before apprehension. It's noteworthy, according to police reports, that Colton had two open cases of assault charges at the time.
Detectives also noted a suspected drug transaction in the area of Purchase St. and Russell St later that day. William Santiago, 22, was found in possession of a loaded handgun with a high-capacity magazine. Santiago has been charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license, marijuana distribution, and intent to distribute marijuana.
In relation to New Bedford's two incidents, continuous efforts by local law enforcement to seize unlicensed firearms and tackle systemic issues fuelling these crimes are crucial. This endeavour requires personal accountability, solid policy implementation, and community involvement.
