Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and city leaders warmly celebrated the opening of the Fruitvale Community Hub, a joint initiative between the City's Department of Violence Prevention (DVP) and The Unity Council (TUC) according to City of Oakland. The hub is designed to promote community safety, confront violence, and encourage healing in one of Oakland's most diverse neighborhoods.
Mayor Sheng Thao underscored her prime focus as mayor – the creation of safer communities in Oakland. She conveyed her excitement about the inauguration of the Fruitvale satellite location as reported in her announcement.
Chris Iglesias, the CEO of Unity Council, expressed the organization's enthusiasm for this joint venture. Reflecting on the inventive strategies stemming from April 2023's Public Safety Summit, Iglesias appropriately acknowledged the security concerns of the Fruitvale community and recognized the necessity for inventive solutions in acordance with the City of Oakland.
DVP Interim Chief Kentrell Killens expressed his positivity about the potential effects of the Fruitvale Community Hub. According to him, it will serve as a base for DVP's crisis responders, family coaches, to connect and safely community engagement team members as outlined in the official proclamation.
