Based on the OPD's statement, the burglaries happened on September 28, breaking down into three separate cases. In the first event, undercover officers from the Violent Crime Operations Center (VCOC) and the Community Resource Officer (CRO) Unit apprehended two suspects involved in an auto burglary in East Oakland after a foot pursuit. In a second incident, suspects attempted to steal a catalytic converter from a stationary car, hitting an unmarked police vehicle in the process and nearly colliding with an undercover officer. The OPD arrested these individuals later, with aid from their helicopter, "ARGUS." The third case involved the Ceasefire Division arresting three persons in a stolen vehicle filled with firearms, a high-capacity magazine, and items from previous auto burglaries.
Tactical changes implemented include the increased use of technology in policing, exemplified by ARGUS's use in the above-mentioned cases. This aerial solution provides enhanced on-the-ground information and coordination opportunities amongst units, enabling increased effectiveness and efficiency in capturing suspects.
Public participation is a critical component in preventing and addressing auto burglaries. Precautionary measures such as locking car doors, refraining from leaving valuables inside vehicles, and reporting questionable behavior to authorities are a few proactive steps that the public can take.
