Yesterday, an adult male was hit by a car, suffering serious injuries in the 200 block of State Street in Springfield near the Central Library, as reported by Mass Live.
Following the collision, which occurred at approximately 6:25 p.m., the man was immediately transported to Baystate Medical Center and declared to have "serious injuries", based on information from WWLP. The driver involved has cooperated fully with the police investigation, remaining at the scene after the incident.
The Springfield Police Department's Traffic Unit has launched an investigation into this incident, prompted by State Street's well-documented history of pedestrian fatalities, reported Mass Live. This includes the loss of 7-year-old Destiny Gonzales and librarian Gayle Ball who were also struck by vehicles near the library.
Reportedly, this area has seen sufficient efforts in pedestrian safety. In the 1970s, a crosswalk was installed at the library's main entrance; however, due to continuous accidents, it was removed in the 1990s. The remaining closest crosswalk is between 100 and 200 yards away from the library entrance, proving inconvenient for those wishing to safely cross, as observed by Mass Live.
