Hector Matos, a 32-year-old Rhode Island man, was recently sentenced to over a year in prison after pleading guilty to his involvement in a significant drug conspiracy. The Pawtucket native will also face two years of supervised release after his incarceration, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office in the District of Massachusetts.

The case that originated from a fatal fentanyl overdose in September 2018 led to an investigation into a drug trafficking organization in the Fitchburg area and resulted, in court-authorized interceptions of communications from members and suppliers of the organization. Matos' involvement in supplying cocaine to the organization was unveiled through these efforts.

The investigation resulted in the seizure of sizable amounts of illegal substances, including 1.8 kilograms of a heroin/fentanyl mixture, 3.6 kilograms of cocaine, 50 grams of crack cocaine, and a stolen loaded handgun. Drug manufacturing equipment and over $376,000 in U.S. currency were also seized. Matos is the 14th defendant to have been sentenced in this case, with all 18 defendants guilty by either plea or trial. The remaining convicts are set to be sentenced in October and November 2023.

The successful prosecution was part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) program to effectively identify, disrupt, and dismantle high-level criminal organizations. Using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency strategy, the task force aims to significantly reduce the effects of drug trafficking on communities.
