San Diego communities, including Rancho Peñasquitos, Sorrento Valley, and Torrey Hills are set to receive road repair upgrades, with a particular emphasis on slurry seal applications. These locations mark the beginning of significant infrastructure overhauls initiated by the City of San Diego. Multiple slurry seal projects will contemporaneously operate across these areas, according to the City of San Diego.
The phased slurry seal application serves as a budget-friendly solution to preserve existing pavement conditions. The qualifying roads will receive an application of a quarter-inch layer comprising an asphalt emulsion, sand, and rock mix. This procedure helps in averting the likeliness of more expensive repairs, such as asphalt overlays and entire road reconstructions.
The announcement clarifies the street paving priority, relying on the Overall Condition Index (OCI) scoring system, which examines pavement smoothness and crack frequency. Additional factors, including traffic volume, road type, accessibility, climatic resilience, maintenance history, concurrent construction projects, and funding availability also influence the decision-making process. Furthermore, repairs are usually grouped by neighborhood to include roads of similar conditions, or scheduled after other projects' completion, for instance, pipe replacements.
An interactive Project Finder map provided by the City allows one to keep an eye on ongoing and upcoming street repairs.
