
Today, the San Diego Police Department announced that it received a $1.25 million grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). This grant will support various traffic safety enforcement and education programs in the San Diego area, aiming to decrease serious injuries and traffic deaths, as per the City of San Diego.
Upon receiving the grant, Sergeant Gregory Minter affirmed its positive impact on public safety, stating, "This funding will enhance our commitment to public safety in our community. It to allows us intensify our efforts in securing our roads and focusing on salient issues such as distracted driving, impaired driving, and speeding."
The San Diego Police Department plans to initiate several traffic safety resources and programs including:
- DUI checkpoints and patrols aimed at suspected impaired drivers.
- High-visibility distracted driving enforcement operations targeting violators of California’s hands-free cell phone law.
- Operations focused on dangerous driver behaviors threatening bicyclists' and pedestrians' safety.
- Operations targeting top traffic-related accidents including speeding, failure to yield, stop sign/red-light running, and incorrect turning or lane changes.
- Community presentations on traffic safety issues like distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding, and bicycle and pedestrian safety.
- Collaborative enforcement campaigns with neighboring agencies.
This grant is until September 2024, provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
