San Mateo's Kiku Crossing Project, Boosting Affordable Housing with 225 UnitsSource: MidPen Housing

MidPen Housing has opened applications for apartments at the forthcoming Kiku Crossing project. This development aims for completion in the Spring of 2024, and it has procured substantial financial backing from the Department of Housing and the Housing Authority of San Mateo County through an infusion of more than $5 million of Measure K funds and the allocation of Project-Based Vouchers, according to the County of San Mateo.

With 225 units, the Kiku Crossing will serve a varied mix of households, including slots for 22 previously homeless households, 8 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and 57 "General Public Employees" from the county and selected public bodies. The rest of the units will be listed at reduced rents to serve different income brackets.

The project, having kicked off in January 2022, had been met with a positive response. It seeks to address San Mateo's affordable housing issue. The focus on inclusivity within the project is evident, with provisions for public employees, formerly homeless households, and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Eligible public employees include those employed by city, county, state, and federal bodies, as well as eight additional tax entities that succeeded the former Redevelopment Agency, as per MidPen Housing.

Should there be an insufficient number of General Public Employees based in San Mateo opting for residence at Kiku Crossing, the remaining units will be leased to all eligible employees, irrespective of their work location or residence.
