Chicago has been experiencing a rash of smash-and-grab style burglaries, with thieves targeting high-end retailers. Stolen vehicles are being crashed into stores as a way of gaining access to merchandise. This wave of crime has recently included five such incidents in three consecutive days.
The crime spree commenced Tuesday when criminals smashed a Dodge Charger and pickup truck into a boutique mall in River North, according to CBS News. Fashion retailer Little Black Dress and Endless Supply Sneaker Boutique were the initial victims. On Wednesday, thieves drove an SUV into streetwear retailer Flee Club.
A break-in at a Louis Vuitton store in Magnificent Mile was thwarted when the burglars failed to shatter the front glass door, as per CBS News. However, the group continued their criminal spree today with two additional cases involving Boneyard Chicago and Unique Chicago, both high-end retailers.
This recent series of crimes has resulted in significant property damage and merchandise losses, and has ignited a debate regarding the restrictions placed by the city on business security measures. Jacob, proprietor of Boneyard Chicago, explained that the city removed previously installed concrete barriers in front of his store, details ABC7 Chicago.
In light of the city's actions and the ongoing burglaries, Jacob opted to hire an overnight security guard. However, to no avail, a group of burglars managed break into Boneyard Chicago, reports ABC7 Chicago. The intruders brandished implied weapons and forced the security guard to leave.
Jacob voiced his frustrations, challenging city officials to "allow us to protect ourselves by installing these barricades. If you're not willing to help us, at least let us help ourselves. Don't stand in our way of protecting our property".
As of now, there have been no arrests related to these smash-and-grab crimes, per CBS News.
