Yesterday, October 5, an Illinois State Police (ISP) squad car was hit by a stolen vehicle during a traffic stop attempt. The fleeing Dodge Charger rear-ended the ISP officer's stationary squad car, with its emergency lights activated, causing the Charger to overturn. The occupants managed to escape the scene, avoiding arrest, according to the press release. Thankfully, no injuries were reported on the officer's end.
In light of these occurrences, the importance of the Move Over Law, or "Scott's Law", and the inherent dangers associated with police pursuits come into focus. As per the ISP, 2023 has witnessed 16 Move Over Law-related incidents, eight of which resulted in officer injuries. This underlines the urgent need for enhanced law awareness and compliance.
The Move Over Law mandates drivers to slow down and change lanes when nearing an emergency vehicle or any vehicle displaying emergency or hazard lights, according to the Illinois State Police. Violations of the law carry severe penalties, including significant fines and possible license suspensions if these violations lead to injuries.
