A coalition of sixteen state attorneys general, led by Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, aligns with the CFPB against the Community Financial Services Association of America (CFSA). The dispute stems from a ruling by the 5th Circuit that the group hopes to overturn, ensuring the CFPB's continuity.
In 2011, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act establishing CFPB, a time of delivering clarity in the often complex financial landscape. Since its start, the CFPB has reclaimed billions for victims of fraud, tackling predatory companies and providing consumers with resources and a platform to voice concerns about financial regulation violations.
The CFPB's importance is highlighted by its many backers, among them consumer-focused organizations and the attorneys general coalition. The bureau is faced with challenges concerning funding and continuity, thanks to the ruling by the 5th Circuit, a move CFSA is quick to utilize. In the midst of this essential case, the attorneys general, represented by states such as New York, California, and Washington, are determined to support the CFPB and uphold its regulatory role within the USA's financial system.
Backing CFPB, the attorneys general issued a joint assertion, underlining the CFPB's vital role to consumers and advocacy for its ongoing existence. The statement read:
"Since its inception, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has been vital to consumers nationwide and to states seeking to protect consumers from overzealous and predatory actors in the financial marketplace. As state attorneys general who are committed to consumer protection and ensuring strong regulatory frameworks are in place to prevent widespread financial abuses, we are unequivocal in our support of the CFPB and its independent regulatory authority. State attorneys general are known as “the People’s Lawyer” for a reason — we endorse for the best interests and wellbeing of our citizens against predatory businesses and lenders, and to the CFPB is an invaluable partner in that work.”
