Jamal Shehadeh, a 40-year-old Taylorville, Illinois resident, has been sentenced to 92 months in jail, with an additional six-year supervised release, for distributing methamphetamine. The sentence, announced by the U.S. Department of Justice on October 4, 2023, is a result of a two-day federal trial in October 2022 where Shehadeh was found guilty by a jury.
As per the prosecution, Shehadeh arranged the sale of methamphetamine to a confidential informant on March 3, 2021. Upon receiving payment electronically, Shehadeh called 911 to divert law enforcement, then went on to complete the sale. This was not an isolated incident, Shehadeh demonstrated a pattern of criminal behavior and was judged to be at high risk for recidivism.
At the sentencing hearing, Chief U.S. District Judge Sara Darrow applied a sentencing guideline enhancement for Shehadeh’s obstruction of justice due to his disregarded testimony. Judge Darrow, while implementing the 92-month sentence, considered Shehadeh's likelihood for reoffending and history of criminal behavior. Notably, at the time of this offense, Shehadeh was on supervised release for a previous federal drug trafficking charge, conditions of which he violated, leading Judge Darrow to add an extra 30-month incarceration term for those violations.
The penalties for distributing methamphetamine are harsh, with up to 30 years of imprisonment, a minimum of six years of supervised release, and a fine up to $2,000,000. This case was handled by the Taylorville Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah E. Seberger.
