The Chula Vista Police Department are actively investigating the murder of Corey McCastle, who was fatally shot on March 19, 2020, on the 700 block of East Street. CVPD and the San Diego County District Attorney's Office arrested a third suspect in relation to the case on October 11, according to the Chula Vista Police Department.
Officers originally responded to gunfire reports on the night of the incident. Upon arrival, they found McCastle with gunshot wounds and promptly transported him to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
From the beginning stages of the investigation, there were suspicions that a dispute over a dog led to the shooting. An unknown individual, described as an adult male dressed in dark clothes and armed with a handgun, was reported to have approached McCastle, fired, and quickly fled the scene per the Chula Vista Police Department.
The investigation eventually led to the identification of four suspects involved in the murder. Earlier this year, two suspects, Victor Nunez, 29, of San Diego, and Aaron Gonzalez, 28, of Murrieta were arrested on murder-related charges. Nunez was taken into custody on February 22 and Gonzalez on September 14.
The suspect arrested on October 11 is 57-year-old Veotis Thomas of La Mesa, charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder. At the time of his arrest, Thomas was already detained in San Diego County Jail for unrelated charges.
In an ongoing collaboration between the Chula Vista Police Department and the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, a fourth arrest is expected soon. Details surrounding the investigation's advancements and the imminent arrest are not currently available to the public due to their sensitive nature.
