On October 13, Vallejo police officers were alerted by a local business about a theft allegedly committed by two individuals in a blue Nissan Altima. They were suspected of stealing over $1,000 worth of merchandise and attempted to escape when confronted, leading to a car chase and collision.
According to the Vallejo Police Department, the officer tried, but failed, to stop the Nissan. The driver defied the law, ran a red light, and eventually caused an accident involving an SUV with a mother and her two young sons and a cement truck. Although the children safely walked away from the accident, the mother did suffer from moderate injuries.
After the collision, the arresting officer was challenged to detain both suspects. Taking advantage of the chaos, the passenger managed to flee on foot. The driver, however, was unable to escape and had been successfully restrained and arrested by the officer.
Two bystanders quickly took action and assisted the officer in this incident. They helped detain the passenger until more law enforcement officers arrived at the scene. The officer opened the driver’s door and tried, but failed, to make an arrest. However, this officer was able to restrain and detain the driver.
A closer look into the suspects' records revealed a history of petty theft and grand larceny for both individuals. The driver, already on probation for similar crimes, had faced arrest less than two weeks prior for stealing an estimated $30,000 worth of merchandise from another establishment. The passenger also had a record, with outstanding warrants for burglary and grand theft in San Mateo and Napa respectively.
