The city of Arlington announced on Thursday that it plans to incorporate air taxis into its transportation infrastructure in preparation for the 2026 World Cup. The initiative, run in partnership with Overair, a California-based company, is to establish a vertiport connecting Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, the Entertainment District, and other North Texas locations. The central hub for this initiative will be the city's municipal airport. These connections will be made using electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft as reported by NBC DFW.
The city's vision, as shared by Arlington's transportation director, Alicia Winkelblech, is for residents and visitors to have the ability to easily traverse the city without the need for personal vehicles. The eVTOLs are planned to be an integrated part of the city's transportation network, combined with its existing on-demand rideshare system, to create a new level of sustainable transportation according to NBC DFW.
This partnership between Arlington and Overair not only underscores the city's commitment to revolutionizing transportation but also demonstrates its potential for creating high-tech and engineering jobs. Overair's participation, which brings the electric-powered Butterfly eVTOL to the project, is seen as an evolution in transportation to cater to an expanding society, notes KERA News.
The Butterfly eVTOL aircraft from Overair has the capacity to carry five passengers, a pilot, and their luggage. It boasts features like a 100-mile range, zero emissions, low noise levels, and the ability to reach speeds above 200 miles per hour, KERA News reports.
Despite the promising prospect of this Arlington-Overair partnership, the final green light for this ambitious project will hinge on the results of a feasibility study to be conducted by Overair. The city's transport officials had suggested in September 2023 that the program could potentially take off in 2027 with a fleet of 100 vehicles, considering the recent consolidation of the city's on-demand services, such as Handitran, Via, and the autonomous RAPID pilot program, into Arlington On Demand in preparation for this innovative aerial rideshare service as stated on KERA News.
