The South by Southwest (SXSW) 2023 festival, recently wrapping up in Austin, Texas, bolstered the local economy with a record-breaking $380 million as reported by KVUE.

The organization had to cancel its 2020 event due to the pandemic. Despite hosting virtual or limited live events in subsequent years, the economic impact was disappointing. However, the 2023 festival surpassed pre-pandemic earnings—the $355 million generated in 2019—signaling a hearty comeback for Austin's arts scene.

Ben Loftsgaarden, spokesperson for SXSW and a partner at Greyhill Advisors, in a KVUE article, attributed this success to continuous local support. Local businesses, including restaurants, bars, and hotels, directly benefited from the $380 million influx, substantiating the event's impact.

Along with the economic boost, SXSW also invigorated Austin's tourism sector. The festival, with 11,500 hotel reservations, added approximately $2.6 million in hotel occupancy taxes. This substantial revenue underpins the City of Austin's live music fund, extending far beyond the festival's short duration. Loftsgaarden's estimates show that this funding can yield over 500 $5,000 grants to local Austin musicians, highlighting the critical role of SXSW in Austin's cultural milieu.

A surge in attendees was also witnessed at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, which registered its second-, third-, and fifth-busiest days during the festival as reported by Statesman. This surge mirrors the increased influx of attendees for SXSW and co-occurring events, fortifying their positive economic impact on the local economy.

Post-festival, organizers plan to increase the payment for performing musicians at the coming year's event. Solo artists are expected to receive $150, while bands should get $350 according KVUE.
