Yesterday, an officer-involved shooting occurred at approximately 5:26 a.m., at the intersection of Grayson and 7th Street, Berkeley, after the local police department responded to an auto burglary in progress. According to the Berkeley Police Department, the incident resulted in one suspect dead and two others arrested, with ongoing investigations aimed to clarify the circumstances.
The responding officers, initially expecting a single suspect, were confronted with multiple individuals. A chase was triggered when two of them tried to avoid arrest by speeding off in a car, which ended up colliding with a patrol vehicle and drove erratically close to another officer and the detainee, provoking an officer to open fire.
The two suspects in the car were arrested at the scene. The driver, who was injured during the shooting, was transported to Highland Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. The two suspects now in custody, a 37-year-old male from Novato and a 30-year-old female from Oakland, face charges of burglary, vehicle theft, and possession of a stolen vehicle.
The Berkeley Police Department's Homicide Division and Internal Affairs Bureau are presently engaged in an investigation, while adhering to standard protocol, into this incident. In accordance with procedures, the Alameda County District Attorney's Office has also launched a concurrent investigation.
