A Bronx man has been thrown the book at him after a Los Angeles federal judge sentenced him to nearly 26 years behind bars for the abduction of a vulnerable elder and what's been described as a shameless interference with an FBI probe. Johnny Ray Gasca, 53, found himself on the wrong end of justice after a high-stakes bench trial revealed the sinister plot against a 68-year-old woman struggling with dementia.
According to a statement obtained by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, the court documents paint a harrowing picture. Wickedly taking advantage of his so-called "senile" "girlfriend," Gasca cunningly finessed tens of thousands from the victim's accounts. Following her escape, the predator, in a bold move in broad daylight, abducted her from the grounds of a West LA Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where she sought her medical sanctuary on July 19, 2021.
United States District Judge André Birotte Jr. sentenced Gasca to a 310-month stretch in federal prison. On June 13, he was found guilty as charged with kidnapping, two counts of attempted obstruction of justice, and a further count of attempted witness tampering—a true courtroom drama in which Gasca was the villain.
Gasca was arrested after FBI agents followed a digital breadcrumb trail to a hotel on Hollywood Boulevard. As detailed in the U.S. Attorney’s Office press release, the elderly woman made a break for it, and Gasca was cuffed following allegations of him previously swiping money from her bank and retirement accounts.
While the weight of the federal hammer has fallen on Gasca, many questions still hover. Refusing to lay dormant in pre-trial custody, the convicted kidnapper made several calls trying to get his friend to wipe the slate clean of any existing evidence on Facebook Messenger, where he called the victim a "Golden goose." His greed, seemingly knowing no bounds, also had him instructing pals to snag his hard drives before the feds could get their hands on them.
This case was brought to its conclusion thanks to the FBI's diligent investigation efforts, with the VA police providing crucial support. Assistant United States Attorneys Kevin B. Reidy and Kathy Yu led the prosecution charge, ensuring this tale of exploitation and obstruction ended with a lengthy prison term.
For more information, Public Information Officer Ciaran McEvoy provided contact details, encouraging those with any questions regarding the case to reach out. But as the city that never sleeps gets wind of this dark saga, one less predator walks its streets. Gasca's days now number, confined within prison walls, as he faces the repercussions of his heinous actions against an individual who deserved protection—not predation.
