On November 7, Jermaine Mandley from Bolingbrook received a life sentence for the murder of Maya Smith, committed in front of her 2-year-old daughter.
As per Chicago Sun-Times, the 48-year-old was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder and two counts endangering a child's life. The crime took place on January 8, when Joliet police found Maya Smith deceased in her car with multiple gunshot wounds, while her toddler was unharmed in the backseat.
Mandley has previously served 15 years for reckless homicide. As per Fox 32 Chicago, in 2001, he ran a red light under the influence, causing the death of a Chicago pastor and his wife. He has also been convicted for firearm possession as a felon, which led to a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence.
According to Chicago Sun-Times, law enforcement linked Mandley's DNA, found on the passenger door, with evidence at the crime scene. Ring camera footage showed Mandley visiting Smith's residence minutes after the shooting, with text messages between them indicating a prior relationship. Mandley was branded "evil incarnate" by Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow due to the callous nature of his crime.
