In a spirited initiative to keep the holiday season merry and bright and the streets safe from tipsy drivers, Chelmsford, Massachusetts, police have joined forces with Christopher’s Towing to offer free sober rides with a side of vehicle towing. The laudable "Tow Drunk to Drive" program, now in its eighth year, is a holiday staple from the night before Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day, seeking to keep inebriated drivers off the road as reported by Boston 25 News.
During this period, famously fraught with overindulgence, residents who've had one too many can ring up Christopher’s Towing or dial the Chelmsford Police Department for a ride home; leaving their car in the lot won't mean leaving their common sense behind too. The program is designed for those who at a private residence or business find themselves buzzed and without a sober way back. Christopher Ferreira, of Christopher’s Towing told Boston 25 News, “I’ve seen a lot of bad situations, and it really sticks with you your whole entire life” he shared, illuminating on the harrowing memories that fuel his dedication.
According to a Boston Globe report, the service touted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, is a 24/7 commitment to public safety. Available to any merry-maker in Chelmsford looking to steer clear of DUI charges, or worse, a tragic accident, the program is a testament to the town's proactive approach to drunk driving prevention.
Chelmsford Police Lt. Frank Goode, speaking on the issue, emphasized the gravity of drunk driving consequences. “This initiative you know, it allows us to maybe stop a mistake turning into a criminal charge or even worse, bodily injury accident, or – God forbid – a death,” Goode said, “You get behind the wheel, you’re intoxicated, God forbid an accident, you hurt yourself, you hurt others, Is there anything worse than that? I think we can all agree, if this initiative stops that, helps prevent that – harm to families, harm to all individuals – I think we can all agree that’s a win,” he expressed to Boston 25 News.
Chelmsford's approach to addressing the uptick in holiday spirits perhaps serves as a beacon and a model for neighboring communities as the festive season rumbles on, a reminder that the warmth of the holidays need not be marred by the chill of regrettable decisions. Anyone in need of assistance is encouraged to call Christopher’s Towing directly at 978-452-7433 or Chelmsford police at 978-256-2521, ensuring a safe conclusion to all holiday revelries.
