This recent trend, dating from late October to early November, involves vehicles missing or showing signs of attempted theft, specifically damage to the steering columns. Reported thefts have been primarily from the 4700 block of S. Vincennes Ave., Langley Ave., St. Lawrence Ave, and the 4800 block of S. St. Lawrence Ave. CPD Community Alert states these crimes have primarily been committed from late night to early morning hours.
The CPD Community Alert has offered several preventative measures citizens can adopt at an individual level. Being vigilant, installing anti-theft devices, and ensuring vehicles are properly secured is key. For those owning to drive Kia or Hyundai vehicles, the CPD provides anti-theft steering wheel locks at local CAPS offices. The city government also offers reimbursement for GPS tracking devices, encouraging residents to take proactive security measures.
