The Windy City's crime wave didn't spare one of its own as an off-duty Chicago cop became the target of gun-toting thieves in a spate of overnight robberies that rocked the city, officials said. According to Chicago Sun-Times, the 33-year-old officer found himself staring down the barrel of a gun in the city's Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side around 10:20 p.m. on Monday.
In a harrowing encounter, the cop was accosted by four assailants after exiting his car on North LeClaire Avenue as a black Nissan menacingly pulled up to the scene. Brandishing guns and rifles, the criminals demanded the officer's property, including his badge. Despite the life-threatening circumstances, the officer emerged unharmed; however, the attackers disappeared into the night, speeding away with the officer's belongings.
A total of nine individuals fell victim to the armed bandits in less than five hours, as reported by CBS Chicago. Beyond the off-duty officer's alarming encounter, five other robberies unfolded across the city, with the last reported around 12:09 a.m. on the city's South Side. There, a man of 52 years of age encountered the same fate at the hands of three gun-wielding males in a black Nissan in the 8000 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue.
The attacks span the maps, from the 700 block of West 15th Street to the 2300 block of West 83rd Street. Fortunately, police have confirmed that none of the victims sustained injuries during the crime. And yet, these acts of aggression leave behind more than the physical; they are palpable echoes of fear that ripple through the community's consciousness.
As details unfold and the Chicago Police Department's Area 3 detectives dig for leads, the city braces against the surge of violence that has swept through its streets. No arrests have been declared in connection with the string of armed robberies. Representatives of the CPD are urging anyone with information to come forward—a collective effort in search of justice and reprieve from the shadows that have descended upon Chicago's quiet corners.
