As Thanksgiving looms, Chicago braces not only for heavy traffic, but also for further inbound Kennedy ramp closures due to ongoing construction. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced in a recent release that these closures were set to begin at 6 a.m. today and are expected to reopen in two weeks, as reported by NBC Chicago.
The ramp closures affect inbound Kennedy to Division Street and North Avenue (Illinois 64) to inbound Kennedy. This will occur during a period of increased traffic and congestion due to the holiday season. Other closures remain in effect, such as inbound Kennedy to Armitage Avenue, expected to reopen the week of November 20. Simultaneously, inbound Kennedy to North Avenue and Armitage Avenue to inbound Kennedy will also reopen the week of November 20th, as noted by WGN-TV.
The Kennedy Expressway is undergoing a bridge rehabilitation project, on the inbound side, extending from the Edens Expressway to Ohio Street. This is part of a broader effort to modernize and improve the city's infrastructure. The project is anticipated to conclude in late fall 2023, with all lanes and ramps reopening, and express lanes resuming regular operations, as stated by IDOT.
Despite this, construction plans do not end here. IDOT officials expect express lanes to be worked on in 2024, while construction on the outbound Kennedy is slated for a 2025 start. During the construction, Chicago drivers can expect to experience significant delays, overnight lane closures, and lane shifts, according to an IDOT press release.
These ongoing construction projects have forced residents and commuters to adapt and seek alternative routes and transportation modes. Beyond immediate benefits, these infrastructure upgrades also aim to improve long-term traffic flow, safety, and highway efficiency.
News outlets like NBC Chicago and WGN-TV, and community stakeholders play an integral role in keeping residents informed about current and forthcoming changes influencing daily commutes.
Though the ongoing bridge rehabilitation project and ramp closures might cause inconvenience during the Thanksgiving holiday, the broader benefits of these improvements must be considered. The efforts to revitalize Kennedy Expressway and adjacent infrastructure are geared toward providing a safer, more efficient, and modern transportation system for Chicago's residents and the many visitors the city attracts.
