The Illinois Veterans' Home in Manteno has reported an uptick in COVID-19 cases among both residents and staff members. The Department of Veterans' Affairs (IDVA) confirmed through a press release on November 9 that 19 veterans and 11 staff members tested positive for the virus, all exhibiting mild symptoms.
Despite the overall decrease in COVID-19 cases, the Manteno facility is grappling with a localized increase. However, it maintains strict infection control measures, including room-stay encouragement, social distancing, mask usage in direct care areas, and intensified disinfection procedures.
Community dining and group activities have temporarily been suspended in the affected areas, with all non-essential outings also curtailed. Nevertheless, staff members have gone above and beyond to plan socially distant activities that allow for both leisure and safety. Visitation allowances, in line with CDC guidelines, continue with families being informed of the outbreak status and urged to reconsider scheduled visits.
While Manteno Veterans' Home continues the battle against COVID-19, its focus remains on preserving the physical and mental well-being of all its residents. The facility's strategy to diligently maintain infection control measures, conduct regular testing, and provide transparent communication to families exemplifies the home’s ongoing commitment to ensure the safety of both military veterans and staff members, not just from COVID-19 but from all potential infectious diseases.
