A sudden blast shattered the serenity of Westfield, Massachusetts, on Friday afternoon as an explosion rocked a Grand Street building, igniting a blaze and setting off a widespread power outage, including a blackout that affected a hospital and the local police station. According to WWLP, Westfield fire crews were dispatched around 3:45 p.m. after reports of the explosion. They were met with towering flames on the second floor of a two-story edifice, burning fiercely within the walls and attic space. Firefighters battled the blaze, bringing it under control by 4:45 p.m.
While the fire left no injuries, emergency responders and utility workers were swiftly on the scene as they responded to a house fire caused when nature took a violent turn and a large branch fell and powerlines struck as reported by Western Mass News. The consequent power surge incinerated a home and plunged roughly 4,000 customers into darkness, including critical facilities like Baystate Noble Hospital and the Westfield Police Department.
In the face of power failure, Baystate Health, keeping patient care foremost, quickly assured that backup generators were operational and their services at the hospital remained uninterrupted. The total number of Westfield Gas and Electric customers impacted by the outage is over 18,000, but by 6:30 p.m., power had been restored to all but the residents of Grand Street.
Credit was extended by Westfield Fire towards the 104th FW Barnes ANG Fire & Rescue for their rapid intervention, and thanks were shared for the support from the Holyoke and West Springfield Fire Departments.
