A trafficker has just pleaded guilty to the high-stakes importation of a staggering $800,000 worth of liquid methamphetamine across the border, as confirmed by U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani. Officials stated that 53-year-old Manuel Ignacio Ley Villa, a naturalized U.S. citizen residing in Mexico, was apprehended after a nerve-wracked approach at the Hidalgo port of entry sparked suspicion among law enforcement.

It was on April 30 that Ley Villa decided to boldly drive across the border in a maroon Chrysler Pacifica. His apparent nervousness didn't go unnoticed, which quickly led to his being singled out and referred to undergo a thorough secondary inspection. It was during this closer look that an x-ray flagged up anomalies within the vehicle's fuel tank.

The discovery was substantial and nefarious: a fuel tank brimming not with gasoline but with a liquid that, upon touching the floor, underwent a startling transformation into crystals, unmasking nearly 91 pounds of liquid meth, a quantity with a street value that law enforcers estimate at 810 grand.

Ley Villa led to a court date where he formally admitted to his crime. U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez has already set the date for the reckoning: February 13, 2024. At this juncture, Villa faces potentially receiving a life sentence in federal prison, along with the possibility of being hit with a $10 million fine.

Until the sentencing date rolls, Ley Villa will remain in custody. Homeland Security Investigations conducted the investigation with the assistance of Customs and Border Protection. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jose A. Garcia is prosecuting the case.
