A Los Angeles man, dubbed "Giovani Dinero," is facing a potential life sentence after being indicted on charges of distributing the lethal drug fentanyl, leading to one death and another person being seriously injured, federal officials announced yesterday.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of California, Antjuan Stephone Doss, 33, of Harbor City, was arraigned on a six-count federal indictment, which included the distribution of fentanyl resulting in death and serious bodily injury. The man with a moniker meaning "John Money," is sitting in jail without bond after pleading not guilty to the charges, authorities said.
The chilling indictment alleges that on August 13, Doss intentionally sold the powerful opioid fentanyl to two individuals, referred to in court documents as "M.N." and "G.N." The latter later succumbed to the effects of the drug. The indictment also charges Doss with other drug and firearm-related offenses stemming from his alleged role as a local distributor in a broader drug trafficking operation.
The search of Doss's residence conducted by law enforcement on August 22 revealed the harrowing proximity of the drug to his domestic life, with fentanyl found on the floor, within easy reach of an infant child. The DEA and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, who carried out the investigation, also discovered a weapon—a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and ammunition—which Doss was barred from possessing due to prior felony convictions for identity theft and unauthorized use of an access device, said the U.S. Attorney's Office.
A conviction on all charges could box Doss into a corner with a minimum sentence of 25 years up to life imprisonment. With the gravity of the opioid crisis weighing heavily on American consciousness, cases like these spotlight the relentless fight against a tide of illegal and often deadly drugs flooding the streets.
