A 52-year-old man suffered critical injuries following an alleged shooting by his tenant, Donald Brochu Jr., 55, who later committed suicide. Events were initiated via a 911 call, flagging a dispute between two roommates at an Elm Street home in Hardwick. Vermont State Police responded promptly, discovering homeowner Robert Marquis suffering from a gunshot wound. NECN reported that Marquis was immediately transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington to receive treatment for life-threatening injuries.
The alleged attacker, Brochu, had absconded from the scene by the time police arrived. An alert was issued, and Brochu was subsequently discovered after crashing his vehicle near Route 15 in Walden, initiating a tense standoff. Armed with a handgun, Brochu resisted state troopers, who made several attempts to subdue him using non-lethal rounds such as bean bags and rubber bullets, ultimately to no avail.
