In a grisly game of hit-and-run, a driver left more than tragedy in their wake – they left clues. According to San Diego County Crime Stoppers, parts of a 2017-2022 Hyundai Ioniq were abandoned at a North Park crime scene after plowing into a 42-year-old man, who succumbed to his injuries days later.
The San Diego Police Department’s Traffic Division, reports that the fatal incident occurred on Utah Street, just south of Polk Avenue on the evening of November 21. What followed was a 6-day vigil of hope that ended in despair, as the injured pedestrian passed away without the culprit's capture. In a bid to apply pressure, Crime Stoppers is dangling a bounty of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
The damaged Hyundai Ioniq is missing a trim piece, sports damage to the driver's side front headlight, and possibly claims dents, and a cracked windshield as its sinister trophies. Investigators need the public's eagle eyes, urging anyone with details to dial up the SDPD’s Traffic Division or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line.
Det. Sgt. Marcelo Populin of the Traffic Division, and SDPD Officer Mark Herring, are the designated points of contact.
