Yesterday, Chula Vista Mater Dei High School faced a distressing situation when a staff member received a threatening call about a potential school shooting. The Chula Vista Police Department swiftly responded to the chilling threat. The campus was put on lockdown in a Secure Campus situation, preventing anyone from entering or leaving, while the police, equipped with a drone, carefully searched for any signs of danger, per the Chula Vista Police Department.
The threatening call came in around lunchtime at 12:19 p.m., prompting immediate collaboration between the school's security and the police. The tense atmosphere of uncertainty lasted for just over an hour, with authorities declaring the school safe at approximately 1:35 p.m. The Chula Vista Police then stayed on campus to ensure the safety of students until they went home.
Investigating the source of the threat, Chula Vista police apprehended a 15-year-old juvenile who had no connection to the school. The teen was arrested around 3:05 p.m., just hours after the initial call.
The Chula Vista Police Department commended Mater Dei High School staff for their quick response and collaboration, which prevented a potential tragedy. They actively seek information from witnesses and encourage tips through San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477 or the P3tips digital platform.
