Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has formally inaugurated November 18–24 as Antibiotic Awareness Week. This action acknowledges the ongoing educational efforts by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) to raise public knowledge about responsible antibiotic use and the hazards of antimicrobial resistance. If incorrectly used, antibiotics can cause serious drug-resistant illnesses and can potentially be deadly as stated by IDPH. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also urges healthcare professionals to monitor their antibiotic prescriptions.
In the United States, annually, more than 2.8 million antimicrobial-resistant infections are recorded, leading to over 35,000 deaths. An earlier CDC report indicated a nationwide decrease of 18% in fatalities from antimicrobial-resistant infections from 2012 through 2017, as detailed by the IDPH, due to substantial investments in infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship. The CDC's 2022 Special Report on COVID-19: U.S. Impact On Antimicrobial Resistance, however, documented considerable increases in antimicrobial-resistant infections and antibiotic use during the pandemic's first year. This underscores the need for continued commitment to preventive measures and antimicrobial stewardship.
In the IDPH's Antibiotic Awareness Week campaign, the focus is on educating both the public and healthcare professionals about the judicious use of antibiotics, emphasizing that antibiotics should only be used when absolutely necessary and to follow use instructions provided by a healthcare professional. Importantly, antibiotics do not remedy viral infections—colds, the flu, RSV, or COVID-19. The improper use of antibiotics raises the probability of generating antimicrobial resistance, which happens when germs and bacteria evolve to resist the drugs intended to destroy them,as stated by the IDPH.
To curb antimicrobial resistance, the IDPH is collaboratively working with several partners to put the 2024–2029 Illinois Action Plan to Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance into effect. This initiative aims to ameliorate antibiotic prescribing practices within all medical settings and to foster public mindfulness about proper antibiotic use as per the IDPH. Additionally, the IDPH is trudging through its antimicrobial stewardship initiative and offering resources and support to healthcare facilities and dispensed via regional workshops, webinars, and toolkits.
Everyone plays a role in thwarting antimicrobial resistance, according to public health experts. During Antibiotic Awareness Week and beyond, healthcare professionals and individuals can contribute by following some simple guidelines. The CDC recommends practicing good hygiene regularly, covering coughs and sneezes, staying home when feeling unwell, and getting recommended vaccines, including those for the flu and COVID, futhers the IDPH. The CDC asserts that prevention is the "most foundational and successful tool to protect people from antimicrobial-resistant infections and their spread.
