A series of threats were made to public officials, police, and an elementary school in the Niles community, leading to the arrest of an out-of-state suspect, 31-year-old Adam Provost of Council Bluffs, Iowa. According to ABC7 Chicago, Provost is facing five felony counts relating to the threats.
The alarming events began on October 6 when Niles police were alerted about a threatening email received by a local elected official. Over the next few days, additional threats were made via phone calls to Niles police officials, which led to an intensified investigation.
Particularly disturbing incidents reported by the Chicago Sun-Times included a letter received by the Niles Police Department containing a white granular substance, later identified as non-hazardous. Similarly, Clarence E. Culver School in Niles was sent a letter containing a non-hazardous white substance, as per ABC7 Chicago.
Even more alarming, on October 16, voicemails stating that chemical weapons would be placed at a local school were received by Niles police officials and a former school resource officer.
However, it was determined by authorities soon thereafter that the suspect was in Iowa, posing no immediate threat to the Niles community. Through collaboration between the Niles and Council Bluffs police departments, swift action was taken, which led to the arrest of Provost on the same day.
Provost's charges, as reported by ABC7 Chicago, include two counts of threatening a public official and three counts of disorderly conduct. A recent detention hearing resulted in Provost being held, pending his next court date.
