Antwan Jones has been found guilty of multiple counts of murder and attempted murder for the shooting that took 11-year-old Takiya Holmes's life back in 2017, as reported by CBS News. The verdict was delivered by a jury on Thursday, November 9. The incident occurred at Parkway Gardens housing development in Chicago six years ago.
Takiya, the cousin of Andrew Holmes, tragically got caught in crossfire. She was in a van with her mom and relatives near 65th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The vehicle was mistakenly hit by bullets meant for rival gang members in a local drug dispute.
Brendan Deenihan, at that time the Chief of Detectives with the Chicago Police Department, commented, "I don't know if people think this is TV where you can shoot someone in the leg, or shoot a handgun out of somebody's hand. These are handguns, and when the bullets start flying, they go everywhere. Obviously, right? This is not a very accurate weapon," as stated in a CBS News report.
Unfortunately, Takiya did not survive, passing away three days later at Comer Children's Hospital of the University of Chicago. Her family made the hard decision to donate her organs—among them a kidney—which was received by her aunt, according to an ABC7 report.
News of the attack reached the jail where Jones, then 19, was held. Surveillance footage from his holding room before his bond hearing shows Jones, handcuffed to a chair, being attacked by another inmate, as detailed in CBS News.
