Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, along with state and local officials, announced the reopening of the I-10 freeway on Monday. The freeway had previously been closed for repairs, which led to significant traffic in the surrounding areas. The reopening, previously announced by Vice President Kamala Harris, Governor Gavin Newsom, and Mayor Bass, followed measures taken to address traffic from the blockade. The mayor's office also released guidance in surrounding areas to alleviate traffic. Protocols include the prolonged closure of the Alameda exit and the 8th Street on-ramp to the westbound direction, and a new protected left-turn lane at Alameda and Olympic to cut congestion.
Over 100 Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters extinguished a fire that erupted during the initial incident, with no registered injuries. Information on road closures was rapidly disseminated through the Emergency Management Department, preventing an early-onset, widespread gridlock.
Mayor Bass and her team remained active in resolving the situation throughout the week. Visiting neighborhoods and businesses affected, lending support to the unhoused, and taking public transportation to inspire its use among citizens. Mayor Bass, alongside LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley, surveyed traffic from the air for a comprehensive understanding of rush hour impacts. A close collaboration with Governor Newsom and Caltrans District 7 led to swift freeway repairs, with the federal government allocating millions in emergency funding to offset costs.
Simultaneously, Mayor Bass instructed LADOT to actively reduce traffic, especially with rain forecasted. LADOT deployed additional traffic officers, modified key traffic corridors, and offered free bus services. Effective inter-governmental coordination and timely I-10 reopening mitigated what could have been a worsening urban issue.
To assist businesses negatively impacted by the I-10 closure, Mayor Bass announced the availability of various resources and support. A micro-enterprise grant program with applications open until December 10, Business Source Centers assisting businesses in the vicinity, and a proactive Local Business Assistance Resource Center in the nearby area, serving as a one-stop-shop for resources and support for affected establishments.
