Marking the two-year anniversary of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), Massachusetts Governor Healey celebrates receiving over $6 billion in federal funds—a result of the law, which supports more than 190 state projects related to infrastructure, workforce development, and climate resilience. These dollars have already made their mark in projects such as the repair of roads and bridges, modernizing airports, and improving internet access according to an official press release.
The Healey-Driscoll decision to actively pursue federal funding for these projects is a demonstration of the administration's commitment to improving infrastructure in a manner that fosters equal opportunities and induces lasting improvements.
Apart from the successful procurement of $6 billion in federal funds, the administration is continuously seeking to secure more for further advancement in economic growth, adaptation to climate change, and addressing social issues. More than $3 billion worth of applications for various ongoing projects like Cape Cod Bridges, flood prevention, and solar power investments have been submitted to federal agencies.
The BIL is shaping a landscape of equity, sustainability, and prosperity. Massachusetts Governor Healey anticipates additional chances to win federal dollars for the further strengthening of the state, with Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll pressing the transformative potential the BIL holds for communities state-wide.
Many of the funded projects are geared towards critical areas across the state, including environmental justice communities, Gateway Cities, and small rural towns. Some recent victories include a $147 million allocation for the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program, aimed at expanding broadband access in Massachusetts. Other such focal areas include the improvement of train corridors, the enhancement of municipal road safety, and the upgrade of coastal communities' infrastructure as mentioned in the press release.
While the BIL's impact on Massachusetts is undeniable, the state government acknowledges the need for ongoing action to achieve their vision. Governor Healey, aware of the vast opportunities for federal funding, filed legislation in October 2023 to set aside an additional $800 million in state funds over the next three years for the pursuit of federal grants. This initiative builds upon existing state matching funds—with around $2 billion having been identified from other sources, indicating a commitment to sustainable financing and project support.
