Yesterday, Massachusetts Governor Maura T. Healey introduced the HERO Act (Honoring, Empowering, and Recognizing Our Servicemembers and Veterans). This legislation, the first in 20 years dedicated solely to veteran welfare, offers to modernize services for veterans in Massachusetts, according to a press release by Mass.gov.
The Act's primary provisions are designed to expand behavioral health treatment access, boost benefits for disabled veterans, and promote inclusivity for women, LGBTQ+ veterans, and their families. With Massachusetts already recognized for its veterans-friendly policies, this legislative package potentially marks a significant step in addressing the changing needs of its veterans.
Recognizing the critical role veterans have played in shaping the country, the HERO Act seeks to promote inclusivity by delivering equal rights and opportunities for all veterans. Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll states that the Act "represents a significant step forward in the care we provide to our veterans, particularly for women and LGBTQ+ veterans" in Massachusetts.
Another crucial aspect of the Act is its initiative to increase access to mental health treatment for veterans. As more servicemembers return from deployments abroad, PTSD and other traumas become increasingly common. Secretary Jon Santiago of Massachusetts notes that "modernizing veterans' services is essential in ensuring our veterans receive the support they deserve through "enhancing benefits and providing behavioral health care" to veterans as mentioned on the press release.
Hearty support from the veteran community has been shown for the HERO Act, with Patrick George, President of the Massachusetts Veteran Service Officers, commending the administration for their dedication to improving the lives of veterans and their families. The adjutant of Massachusetts Veterans of Foreign Wars, Bill LeBeau, also expressed appreciation to Governor Healey and her administration for recognizing the need to give back to the nation's heroes.
Policy reform of this magnitude necessitates careful consideration of implementation. Governor Healey's office must ensure the Act represents more than just legislation but an ongoing commitment to the evolving needs of veterans and their families in Massachusetts.
Encouraged by the HERO Act, collaboration with veteran-serving organizations such as the Military Friends Foundation, Bilingual Veterans Outreach Center, and Blue Star Families can provide fresh insights into veterans' needs. This will help to form an inclusive, comprehensive approach to reforming veterans' services in Massachusetts.
