A Massachusetts resident was swindled out of over $100,000 by two men pretending to be home repair contractors as per a report on MassLive. The men, Hughie Antony O'Donoghue, 24, and Michael Nevin, 21, both of Wayland, were subsequently arrested and charged with the scam.
According to the Boston Globe, the fraudulent contractors invoice their victims for repairs to the home, then continually increase the charges without completing the work. Operating without legal licenses, they capitalized on their victims' trust and one victim reportedly lost more than $100,000.
At the Concord District Court, O'Donoghue and Nevin faced arraignment, were held to quickly arrange $15,000 in bail each, and were required to surrender their passports and wear GPS monitors according to the Boston Globe. Interestingly, they also have outstanding arrest warrants in Ireland, for which the details are not currently disclosed, as mentioned in Patch.
Maynard Police are advising residents to stay cautious and perform detailed research on any companies before hiring and paying contractors.
