In the continued pursuit of the infamous MS-13 gang, recent events saw the arrest of purported gang member Adam Rodriguez, or "Pelon." Arrested for conspiracy to take part in a racketeering enterprise, Rodriguez is connected to the 2010 murder of an Allston man under a Chelsea, Massachusetts bridge, as stated in a Justice Department announcement yesterday.
MS-13, originating in El Salvador, has extended its reach into the United States and other nations such as Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. Known for its severe acts of violence, particularly against opposing gang members, it also inflicts harm upon local communities. The expansive influence and network of MS-13 poses a significant challenge for law enforcement agencies and communities alike.
The indictment implicates Rodriguez in the murder of an Allston man in Chelsea, alongside other MS-13 members on December 18, 2010. It was recently found Rodriguez's voice matched a recording from a January 26, 2011 MS-13 meeting, where he confirmed his involvement in the murder. The recording also demonstrated that Rodriguez was physically assaulted for 13 seconds by other gang members as punishment for departing Massachusetts following the murder without receiving prior consent. The indictment further claims that Rodriguez partook in other attempted murders in association with MS-13 members succeeding the December 2010 crime.
Another alleged MS-13 affiliate, William Pineda Portillo, also known as "Humilde," has been charged with RICO conspiracy linked to the same case. Initial indictment in 2017 saw Pineda Portillo escape arrest until May 2022 when he was captured at the Texas border and extradited to Boston. Records show that he was previously deported to El Salvador under a different name, as per the Justice Department.
A subsequent investigation indicated a car owned by Pineda Portillo's father was reportedly used in transporting Rodriguez, other MS-13 members, and the Allston man to the fatal location in Chelsea. Pineda Portillo stands accused of attempting to sell a firearm to a person he thought was a fellow MS-13 member, who turned out to be a cooperating witness for law enforcement. Currently in custody, Portillo faces further accusations of conspiring to murder a suspected informant within MS-13.
