Former President Barack Obama, during his presidential foundation's Democracy Forum, emphasized the need to reshape the economy considering challenges from artificial intelligence (AI), climate change, and income inequality. His address took place in McCormick Place, Chicago according to the Chicago Tribune.
He vocalized concerns over AI's potential effects on society and the workplace. The ex-president drove home the idea of ensuring the benefits of new technologies flow to all, rather than rejecting or ignoring them.
In light of AI's potential to render several jobs obsolete, Obama supports the investigation of options such as a condensed workweek, universal basic income, and focusing on sectors like childcare, healthcare, and education. The sectors listed hold more resistance against automation and providing a safety net for basic needs require attention to reinforce democracy, reports the Chicago Tribune.
Obama endorses increased efforts toward unionization, following the substantial decrease in union jobs since the fifties. He proposes that the service sector pioneer novel methods of meeting employee needs through continuous education and pocket-friendly childcare.
On top of advocating for workers, Obama called on corporations to rethink traditional roles such as maximizing shareholder value and take into account their effect on workers, the economy, and society. He urged them to align their actions with their words, given the modern trend of corporations rewriting mission statements and consumers considering social issues when purchasing, details the Chicago Tribune.
Along with his involvement in the Democracy Forum, Obama participated in other events honoring his presidential election's 15th anniversary. Despite existing societal challenges, he continues to encourage the ability of individuals to improve the world, proclaiming "democracy is key to solving local and global problems", as mentioned by ABC 7.
