Glenview, Illinois resident and registered sex offender, Weston Opas, is facing multiple felony charges involving a minor and gun-related offenses. These charges are the result of information supplied by the Cook County Sheriff's Office, which indicates that Opas groomed and engaged in sexual acts with the underage victim for the past year.
Police acted on a tip-off from Boston law enforcement about a missing juvenile linked to Opas, leading to an investigation at his residence in the 10300 block of Michael Todd Terrace. The accused initiated contact with the victim through an gaming app last year and maintained it via texting. Opas, reportedly, traveled multiple times to Boston to meet the victim and engage in illicit acts.
A review of the victim's phone revealed Opas was aware of the victim's age. A search warrant, executed on October 26th, led to police finding the victim at Opas' residence. A subsequent search exposed the presence of firearm, ammunition, and body armor in Opas' possession, state of violation since he's a convicted sex offender.
Opas' criminal history dates back to 2004 in Orange County, Florida, when he was convicted for child pornography. Adding to his criminal dossier, Opas faced charges this September in Cook County for violating sex offender registration laws as he was spotted in a school zone. Following these latest incidents, on October 28th, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office approved multiple felony charges against him, which include Traveling to Meet a Child, Grooming, Felon in Possession/Use of a Firearm with Body Armor, and Failure to Report Annually/Sex Offender Registry.
The victim is currently in the custody of the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services and is waiting for relatives from Chicago to arrive. Opas appeared in court for a status hearing on November 1st, where a decision was made to hold him for a hearing scheduled for to be on November 16th. Opas is innocent until proven guilty
