Today, Riverdale's Mayor Lawrence Jackson was indicted for alleged perjury and obstruction, as per a Department of Justice press release. This activity raises concerns about public trust and the accountability of our representatives.
The lawsuit against Jackson was prompted by Tri-State Disposal Inc. in 2018. They blamed the mayor for ending their garbage collection contract out of spite. The allegation claimed the mayor's actions were retaliation against Tri-State for opposing a zoning permit issued by the city, reportedly benefiting a supporter of the mayor who ran a recycling operation.
New revelations allege that during a deposition on February 25, 2021, Jackson lied under oath, attempting to hide his contacts with the recycling business's owner. The aforementioned was shown to have significant involvement in Centennial Holdings, a trucking venture owned by Jackson and his wife on paper, yet operated by the recycling business owner. During the deposition, it was alleged Jackson sent text messages to this individual answering questions during the session, falsely stating a Riverdale village administrator recommended the new garbage collection service instead of the recycling company owner.
For Mayor Jackson, these charges raise inquiry into ethical conduct and responsibilities of public officials.
