Round Rock, Texas, has made considerable achievements in the execution of its 10-year comprehensive plan, Round Rock 2030, introduced in June 2020. The plan aims to enhance aspects like housing, economic growth, and transportation, striving to convert Round Rock into a prosperous, comprehensive community.
In a year, the city has had a significant population boom, increasing by nearly 5,193 residents. Projections predict that the number of inhabitants will surge by 65,000 by 2040. The City of Round Rock states an increase in housing provision has been critical to meeting the growing needs. Hence, a study was carried out on vacant plots and potential density scenarios.
Maintaining the standard of living is prioritized in Round Rock 2030, implicating large-scale investments in public facilities and community conveniences. Funding for new hiking and biking trails, park enhancements, and recreational center upgrades was approved in May 2023. A new library was launched in January 2023 to messily offer extensive resources and community programs to residents.
The City of Round Rock also mentioned considerable economic progress in the past year, including a $5 million expansion of the Kalahari Resorts and the creation of the Round Rock Defense Innovation Fund. Economic development agreements with various organizations estimate 135 new job posts and $295 million in investments.
Revitalization of downtown has been a key aspect of Round Rock 2030. More than $197.34 million has been invested in infrastructure and amenities. A contract for a new park along Brushy Creek was approved, while renovation blueprints for existing structures like the old library and the Griffith Building got finalized. Several proposed projects will increase residential options in the downtown area.
Preserving neighborhood quality and encouraging involvement have also been areas of significance for Round Rock. Celebrating its 9th Annual Neighborhood Conference, the event saw 80 community leaders networking and learning about the city's services. Existing programs and the recently established Community Enhancement Team focus on fostering a sense of community.
Also, notable progress has been achieved in mobility, housing, mixed-use development, and adaptability according to Round Rock 2030. The City cleared $171,150 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for improvements to bus shelters and initiated Round Rock Rides, a public transit ride-sharing service. To cater to the housing gap, city initiatives are targeting diverse housing options.
Various Planned Unit Developments (PUDs) have been implemented to encourage high-density multifamily housing and commercial spaces. As part of adaptability measures, the city has improved their development application process through an online portal and is preparing for the introduction of Google Fiber's high-speed Internet service later in 2023.
