The Salem community recently faced a challenge as the local hospital reported potential exposure to HIV and hepatitis infections for some patients. This came after Boston25 News cited an error in applying IVs as the potential cause, possibly affecting around 450 endoscopy patients within a two-year span.

According to WHDH, the hospital made immediate corrections to the IV practice, alerted its quality and infection control teams, and collaborated with public health officials to assess the risk. Despite the frightening potential consequences of such an event, the prospects of infection are considered to be extremely small.

The hospital has made efforts to swiftly inform affected patients, establish a free clinician-staffed hotline for queries, and offer free screening options. In an interview with CBS Boston News, the hospital revealed there is no evidence of resulting infections from the unfortunate incident up to now.

An apology was issued by the hospital, expressing remorse over the incident—“We earnestly apologize to those impacted, and we commit ourselves to providing high-quality, compassionate health care to our community,” quoted from Boston25 News
